Stressed Children are Protected by Caring Adults

By Loretta Blevins, APPC 4414

Children are especially vulnerable to unpredictable times as it is intensely stressful for children not knowing what to expect from all the change. Caring adults in their lives are so important in protecting them by creating routines, cultivating playfulness, and space to work through emotional reactions.

Caring adults can remember to give extra hugs, smiles and extra special time. Model and demonstrate coping skills, because children will imitate adults in reacting to situations. Sticking to routines and adapting routines to a new normal. Emphasize routines at playtime, clean up, nap/bedtime, and meals. If you don’t already, play soothing music, use calm verbal responses, and allow children time for talking about anything. Adults sharing their own feelings of stress and anxiety with children help children feel it is ok. Children will also do well with simple details and honest explanations.

Provide time and opportunity for relaxing play, using sand, water, paint, and playdough for all ages, even adults. Create props for dramatic play so children can pretend they are firefighters, doctors, or other helpers to help children overcome feelings of helplessness.  Read children’s books together that deal with fearful experiences and coping. This opens the door for children to express their own feelings. Spending time playing any game children like to help them get their minds off other concerns. Additionally, remember adults need to relax, de-stress and create self-care routines that help them remain calm and joyful.
